SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERSupervisor: Special Education Coordinator FLSA Status: ExemptDepartment: Special Education Terms of Employment: According to terms of certified contractSupervises: none Position Type: Full-TimeNature of WorkCreate an appropriate environment favorable to learning and personal growth; Motivate eachstudent to develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes in accordance with his/her ability; Develophis/her special talents.Duties and Responsibilities Perform case management responsibilities for assigned caseload, which includes but notlimited to creating Individual Education Programs (IEP), scheduling IEPs at leastannually, provide special education services as per IEP, and provideaccommodations/modifications to staff who work with the student. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the location(s) and at times designated. Teach skills, knowledge, and attitudes to students on grade academic level in thecurriculum area of assignment, utilizing district curriculum guides prescribed by theBoard of Education or other appropriate agencies. Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with basic instructionalphilosophy. Provide individualized and small group instruction and establishes a classroomenvironment in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students with varyingintellectual abilities, attitudes, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles. Provide instruction whereby students may develop concepts and appreciation for thecourse of study, enhancing their ability to make qualitative judgments. Develop instructional plans appropriate to the needs of the students. Evaluate student performance and maintains an accurate written record of each studentsindividual progress. Provide for the appropriate development of organizational skills and social/emotionalgrowth. Identify student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helpingstudents solve health, attitudinal, and learning problems. Utilize technology in planning, developing and implementing instructional objectives. Establish and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly andproductive environment and encourage students to take responsibility for their ownbehavior. Participate in curriculum planning and program development within the assigned schoolor division. Confer, as needed, with parents and other professional staff. Supervise students activities during the regular workday. Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by thedistrict, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities. Exhibit professionalism by maintaining good attendance and adhering to establishedwork schedule. Comply with the Code of Ethics, administrative directives, board policies, local, state andfederal statues and rules and regulations. Communicate and display courteous and professional behavior toward students, thepublic, the Immediate Supervisor, School and District Administrators, staff and peers. Safeguard the confidentiality of information pursuant to the Family Educational Rightsand Privacy Act (FERPA) and other applicable state and federal statutes. Evenings and weekend work may be required. Perform such other tasks as may be assigned.Minimum Qualifications1. Bachelors degree in Education or related field from a regionally accredited college oruniversity.2. Current New Mexico Public Education Department Pre K-12 Special Education License.3. Valid drivers license.4. Ability to pass a criminal background check.Knowledge, Abilities, and SkillsKnowledge of: various machines and equipment including but not limited to computer,telephone, instructional technology.
