POSITION: LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE MIDDLE SCHOOL ELA TEACHER

POSITION TITLE: Long-Term Substitute Middle School ELA Teacher, 1.0 FTE - ANTICIPATED

LOCATION: Mill River Union High School

START & END DATE: Starting on or about August 20, 2026 | Ending on or about October 20, 2026

SUPERVISED BY: Building Principal

COMPENSATION RANGE: In accordance with the MRUUSD-approved rates

WORKS WITH: Students, Parents, Teachers, Support Staff, Administration, and Community Partners

BASIC FUNCTION:

The long-term substitute middle school ELA teacher will deliver high-quality, standards-based English Language Arts instruction, foster a supportive classroom environment, and manage day-to-day classroom responsibilities during the temporary period specified above.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates who hold current licensure in the State of Vermont in Middle School English Language Arts (or Elementary/Secondary with an ELA endorsement), or who demonstrate eligibility for such licensure, shall be given preference over non-licensed applicants.

Strong knowledge of middle school literacy, literature, the writing process, and language mechanics.

Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners within an inclusive classroom setting.

Must have excellent classroom management, verbal, and written communication skills.

Must be able to pass all background and fingerprint requirements needed to work with school-age students.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lesson plans aligned with Vermont/Common Core ELA standards for middle school students.

Maintain a positive, organized, and respectful classroom environment conducive to learning.

Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments, maintain accurate grading records, and provide timely feedback.

Collaborative with grade-level teams, special education staff, and interventionists to support student success.

Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and behavioral expectations.

Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities as required by the MRUUSD.

Other responsibilities as assigned by the Administration.
