High School Diploma - $119 per day

Degreed - $133 per day

Certified Teacher - $140 per day

Must be 21 years of age

Job Goal

To ensure uninterrupted, high-quality instruction whenever the regular classroom teacher is absent by faithfully delivering the prepared lesson plans, maintaining an orderly and supportive learning environment, and upholding all district policies, thereby safeguarding students' academic progress and well-being.

Qualifications (minimum education, licensure, skills and/or experience)

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with students, parents, school staff and the public.
  • Ability to manage student behavior in accordance with school district policies.
  • Must meet the requirements of a criminal background check, including fingerprinting, as outlined in Louisiana Revised Statute 17:15 and Bulletin 746.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implements the absent teacher's written lesson plans and instructional materials to ensure continuity of learning and alignment with district curriculum.
  • Differentiates instruction and classroom activities as needed to meet diverse student abilities, learning styles and Individualized Education Program (IEP) / 504 accommodations.
  • Maintains effective classroom management by establishing clear expectations, reinforcing positive behavior and applying school-wide discipline procedures consistently.
  • Takes accurate attendance and other required records at the beginning of each period or day, following campus reporting procedures.
  • Supervises students in all assigned settings (classroom, halls, lunchroom, playground, bus loading areas and emergency drills) to promote safety and order.
  • Creates a safe, inclusive and respectful environment that protects students' physical and emotional well-being.
  • Communicates promptly with the main office and neighboring teachers regarding any emergencies, behavior issues or instructional questions.
  • Uses classroom technology and instructional resources responsibly, logging in with provided credentials and ensuring devices are shut down or secured after use.
  • Collects, organizes, and labels student work, assessments and notes for the returning teacher, documenting any incomplete tasks or deviations from the plan.
  • Leaves a concise end-of-day report that summarizes lesson coverage, student progress, behavior concerns and materials used or depleted.
  • Arrives on time, remains on duty for the full assignment and adapts quickly to schedule or room changes communicated by campus administration.
  • Promotes a positive image of the school and district through professional dress, courteous interactions and support of campus routines and cultural norms.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Fosters positive working relationships by collaborating effectively with supervisors, co-workers and school administration to support departmental and district goals.
  • Maintains professional and courteous communication with students, parents and school staff.

Compliance

  • Follows school, district, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student records and personnel information at all times, complying with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) (where applicable) and district privacy policies.

Safety and Security

  • Ensures the safety and security of students and staff by adhering to school safety policies, supervising assigned areas, reporting potential hazards and responding promptly to emergencies in accordance with established protocols.

Professional Development

  • Participates in required substitute orientation, safety training and ongoing professional development to stay current with instructional strategies, classroom technology and crisis-response procedures.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the school.

Physical Demands

This role primarily operates in an indoor, climate-controlled environment, with occasional exposure to moderate temperature variations. The usual methods of performing job functions require moderate lifting (up to fifty [50] pounds), carrying, pushing and pulling with frequent engagement in activities such as standing, walking and sitting. Additional physical requirements include ability to sit for prolonged periods; ability to perform repetitive hand and arm movements; ability to climb up stairs and/or steps; ability to drive within or outside of the district to various schools, meetings and events; ability to work in varying conditions, such as inclement weather, wet or slippery floors and/or exposure to cleaning chemicals; ability to handle changes in temperature and noise levels; ability to manage high levels of physical and mental energy throughout the workday; emotional and physical resilience to handle stressful situations, emergencies or high-demand environments; adequate strength to assist students with mobility needs, including lifting or carrying medical supplies; and ability to respond quickly to emergencies, providing first aid or support to students as needed.
