Foreign Language Teacher Jobs in District of Columbia
A Foreign Language Teacher in secondary education is responsible for teaching students a new language, as well as educating them about the culture, history, and traditions associated with that language. Their duties include developing lesson plans, instructing students in grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure, and providing instruction on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the foreign language. The teacher may also organize cultural activities and events to enhance students' understanding and appreciation of the language they are studying.
Important skills for a Foreign Language Teacher include excellent communication and instructional skills, patience, cultural sensitivity, and creativity in teaching methods. They must have a strong command of the language they're teaching, both written and spoken. Certification typically involves a Bachelor's degree in teaching or a relevant field and a state teaching certification, with additional certification or endorsement in teaching the specific foreign language. Prior to becoming a Foreign Language Teacher, an individual might have roles such as a Language Tutor, Teacher's Assistant, or an ESL (English as a Second Language) Instructor.
