ESL Teacher Jobs in California
An English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher in secondary education is responsible for instructing non-native English students in reading, writing, and conversational English. They utilize engaging teaching methods to develop students' English grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and English comprehension skills. These educators design lesson plans, conduct assessments to monitor student progress, and modify instruction to meet students' diverse learning needs. Additionally, ESL teachers often assist students in assimilating into a new culture and navigating the school system, which may involve collaborating with other teachers, school staff, and parents.
ESL Teachers should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, creativity in teaching methods, and a strong understanding of language teaching pedagogy. A bachelor's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or a related field is typically required. However, many schools prefer candidates with a master's degree in TESOL or Applied Linguistics. In addition to their degree, ESL teachers should have a state teaching license and an ESL teaching certification like the TESOL, TEFL, or CELTA. Prior to becoming an ESL teacher, individuals may have held roles such as a classroom teacher, a tutor, or a teaching assistant.
