Ask a Resume Writer: Do Employers Care If You Use AI for Resume Writing?
Artificial intelligence is completely reshaping how candidates apply for jobs today. From drafting cover letters to preparing for tough interview questions, technology offers countless shortcuts for busy professionals. Naturally, many job seekers are turning to AI for resume writing to save time and beat applicant tracking systems.
But… do employers care if you use AI for your resume?
Will a robot-generated document hurt your chances of landing an interview, or will it give you a competitive edge?
Find out what hiring professionals really think in this edition of Ask a Resume Writer, featuring expert insights from Laurie Ballow, professional resume writer at iHire.
AI for Resume Writing
For starters, is using AI for resume writing a good idea?
“Using AI to build your resume is a great way to overcome writer’s block,” Ballow began. “It helps you organize your thoughts, optimize for keywords, and structure your experience quickly. But, you can’t rely on it to do all the heavy lifting.”
The pitfalls of generating a document without editing it can be disastrous for your job search.
“AI often creates highly generic content that lacks personalization,” Ballow explained. “Worse, it can hallucinate or invent qualifications you do not actually possess. Your resume needs your unique voice and accurate career history.”
So, do employers care if you use AI for resume creation? Most hiring managers do not mind the technology itself. They understand that candidates use various tools to put their best foot forward. However, they care deeply about the accuracy, readability, and authenticity of the final product.
The HR Professional’s Perspective
To get a recruiter’s point of view on the topic, we asked Vickie Krolak, SHRM-CP, SPHR, Senior HR Business Partner at iHire, for her take.
“I think using AI is fine as long as the information is accurate on the resume. Recruiters are finding more than 30% of candidates are falsifying their resumes,” Krolak noted.
When you apply for a job, trust is the foundation of the hiring process. If a recruiter discovers false information generated by a chatbot, your application will likely go straight to the rejection pile.
“We’re also looking for a genuine professional connection,” Krolak continued. “When reading your application, we want to see your unique career journey. A generic, monotonous document simply will not capture attention the way a personalized, human-edited resume will.”
Can Employers Tell If You Used AI?
Job seekers often wonder, can employers tell if you used AI to write your application?
“If you used AI to write your resume and either changed very little or made no edits whatsoever, employers will definitely be able to tell,” Ballow said. “They’ll easily spot repetitive, jargon-filled phrasing, like ‘spearheaded a paradigm shift’ or ‘navigated complex landscapes’. Even though resumes are typically written in a somewhat robotic way, it’s pretty clear when the human element is missing.”
On the other hand, AI-related skills are highly sought after right now in many industries. Using AI the right way to create a strong, personalized, and accurate resume demonstrates that you have those skills and could be a selling point in your interview.
“You might even put AI-specific skills and software on your resume as well, like ‘Prompt Engineering’ or ‘Claude.’” Ballow added.
Best Practices for Using AI in Your Resume
If you decide to use AI for resume writing, you need a strategy to ensure your document remains professional and authentic. Here is how you can use technology effectively to boost your job search.
Use AI as a Starting Point
“Think of artificial intelligence as a brainstorming partner. Let it generate a rough draft, outline your job duties, or suggest formatting options,” Ballow advised. “Once AI provides a foundation, rewrite the content to reflect your true voice.”
Customize for the Job & Fact-Check Everything
Generic resumes rarely win interviews. Instantly tailor your bullet points for specific job descriptions with AI tools.
“But again, always, always, always verify that the output aligns with your actual experience,” Ballow said.
As Krolak mentioned, accuracy is completely non-negotiable.
“You are ultimately responsible for the information you present to a potential employer. A made-up degree or fake metric could cost you a great job offer,” warned Ballow.
Find the Best AI Tool for Resume Writing
Not all platforms are created equal. A generic chatbot will spit out a generic, poorly formatted document. Finding the best AI tool for resume writing means looking for software specifically designed for career advancement.
iHire’s Resume Builder, for example, offers ATS-friendly templates and provides industry-specific keyword suggestions. Rather than generating a document from scratch, these specialized tools guide you through the process, ensuring your final product meets modern hiring standards.
Showcase Your Unique Achievements
“A computer does not know about the time you stayed late to fix a critical client issue. It does not know how you mentored a struggling coworker,” Ballow continued. “Add specific metrics, personal accomplishments, and human elements that no algorithm could possibly invent.”
Balancing Efficiency With a Human Touch
At the end of the day, do employers care if you use AI for resume building?
Probably not, but they do care about the results you’ve delivered. Hiring managers want to see a clear, accurate, and compelling representation of your skills. They want to hire a real person who will bring genuine value to their team. Using AI for resume writing is a fantastic way to speed up your job search, but it is not a substitute for your personal touch.
