Position Overview
The successful candidate will join a dedicated special education team that includes:
- 5 Special Education Teachers
- 2 Speech-Language Pathologists
- 1 Occupational Therapist
- 1 Physical Therapist
- 1 Elementary Academic Evaluator
- 2 School Social Workers
- 1 District BCBA
- 1 District School Psychologist
Responsibilities include designing, implementing, and monitoring high-quality, Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) that addresses students' individualized learning needs and drives progress toward IEP goals. The successful candidate will plan and deliver engaging, evidence-based instruction; implement assessments to monitor student growth; and collaborate closely with colleagues, families, and service providers to ensure student success.
The position also includes special education case management responsibilities, including the development and maintenance of IEPs, progress monitoring, documentation, meeting scheduling and facilitation, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal special education regulations, timelines, and procedural requirements.
The position includes supervision duties such as lunch and recess coverage, participation in school events and activities, and collaboration with a large number of colleagues, including school social workers, instructional coaches, the Director of Special Services, and building administrators.
Certification Requirements
- Bachelor's degree; Master's degree or higher preferred
- Maine Teacher of Exceptional Students Certification (282)
- Maine Criminal History Record Check (CHRC)
Professional Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of special education law, regulations, procedural safeguards, and compliance requirements, including the ability to manage timelines, maintain accurate documentation, and facilitate IEP meetings effectively
- Knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices and the ability to design and implement specially designed instruction that addresses students' unique learning needs and promotes meaningful progress toward IEP goals
- The ability to collect, analyze, and use data to inform instructional decisions and differentiate support for students
- A commitment to equitable and nondiscriminatory educational practices
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities, schedules, and student needs
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a special education caseload while balancing instructional responsibilities, communication with families, and compliance requirements
Preferred Experience and Training
- Explicit and systematic instructional programs (e.g., SPIRE, Wilson, Fundations, Lindamood-Bell, Orton-Gillingham)
- Responsive Classroom
- Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
- Supporting students with a range of learning, behavioral, and developmental needs
- Designing and delivering engaging, hands-on, and high-interest intervention lessons
