POSITION SUMMARY The Middle School English Language Arts Teacher creates a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that supports the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescent learners. This position is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality English Language Arts instruction aligned with district curriculum and state standards while fostering critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation for reading and writing. The Middle School ELA Teacher utilizes data-informed instructional practices to support diverse learners in the development of reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, and language skills. The teacher builds strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues to support student achievement and promote a positive middle school experience. QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will possess: Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate (BA Endorsement, Grades 6-12) Middle School teaching experience preferred Demonstrated ability to provide engaging, student-centered instruction that supports diverse learners Strong knowledge of adolescent literacy development, reading comprehension strategies, writing instruction, grammar, vocabulary, and literature analysis Experience implementing differentiated instruction and using assessment data to inform instructional decisions Ability to foster discussion, collaboration, critical thinking, and student voice in the classroom Strong classroom management, organizational, collaboration, and communication skills Commitment to creating an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment Experience integrating instructional technology and digital literacy skills into classroom instruction Meet all State and Federal requirements for Highly Qualified status within the assigned subject area DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Planning and Preparation Plan, implement, teach, and assess a comprehensive English Language Arts instructional program aligned with district curriculum and state standards Develop engaging lessons that include direct instruction, modeling, guided practice, collaboration, discussion, independent application, and opportunities for student reflection Design and utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and inform instructional decisions Differentiate instruction and learning experiences to meet the diverse academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students Plan meaningful reading and writing experiences that support student growth in comprehension, analysis, written expression, communication, and critical thinking Incorporate a variety of literary genres, informational texts, and culturally responsive instructional materials Utilize instructional technology and digital resources to enhance student learning and engagement Use student performance data to adjust instruction and improve outcomes Implement research-based instructional practices and literacy strategies that support adolescent learners Classroom Environment Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive, and productive learning environment conducive to teaching and learning Create a classroom culture that promotes mutual respect, positive relationships, collaboration, and student responsibility Foster a community of readers, writers, and learners where students feel valued, supported, and encouraged to take academic risks Set and reinforce clear behavioral and academic expectations Organize classroom procedures, materials, and routines to maximize instructional time and student engagement Utilize a variety of classroom management and instructional strategies to support a positive learning environment Encourage student confidence, independence, self-advocacy, and a growth mindset Instruction Deliver high-quality English Language Arts instruction using a variety of instructional approaches, including whole-group, small-group, workshop, inquiry-based, and individualized learning opportunities Engage students actively in reading, writing, speaking, listening, discussion, and collaborative learning experiences Teach and assess reading comprehension, literary analysis, written communication, grammar, vocabulary, research, and presentation skills Support students in developing critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning skills through analysis of literature and informational texts Provide timely, meaningful feedback to students regarding academic progress and growth Maintain accurate records related to attendance, grades, assessments, and other professional responsibilities Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues regarding student expectations, progress, achievement, and behavior Use effective questioning and discussion techniques to deepen student understanding and engagement Support district instructional frameworks, curricular initiatives, and literacy goals Professional Responsibilities Participate actively in faculty committees, school events, student activities, professional learning opportunities, and district initiatives Collaborate positively and professionally with colleagues, support staff, administrators, students, and families Engage in curriculum development and continuous improvement efforts related to teaching and learning Reflect on instructional practices and implement adjustments to improve growth and student success Develop and maintain effective communication processes with students and families regarding student progress and classroom expectations Maintain compliance with district
