The LA LGBT Center and JMCS's innovative education programs are designed to provide youth, ages 16-26, with an engaging educational experience that meets individual needs. We combine classroom-based instruction, project work, credit recovery, life skills, technical job training and other academic experiences into a highly personalized high school diploma program. Classroom activities are combined with top notch vocational training provided by the LA LGBT Center. Comments and Other Information The academic classroom is a self-contained class with approximately 15 - 20 students; the instructor facilitates all academic content, including collaboration with the Special Ed department to appropriately address the needs of students with an IEP. JMCS provides curriculum and support, and the instructor is held responsible for creating a dynamic, engaging, rigorous, and supportive experience for our students. This position will be supported by the LA LGBT Center staff who provide vocational training, work experience and case management. JMCS staff on site work collaboratively with the LA LGBT Center staff to support the success of the students. Teachers are expected to actively engage in all school-wide professional development, which includes several all-school Zoom Meetings throughout the year, a 3-day in-person all-school conference in January, non-student teacher planning days, monthly JMCS Director meetings, and New Teacher Training (for all those new to our school) via Zoom during the first week of August. The position is an hourly position. The school operates on an 11-month, Semester calendar running August through June, with holidays and breaks. This position is expected to be an active and cooperative member of the JMCS and LA LGBT Center communities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include (but not limited to) assisting with the following: * Actively engages students to attend class daily. * Ongoing recruitment of previously enrolled and potential new students. * Prepare monthly and weekly lesson plans for all courses. * Prepare an individual graduation plan for each student * Be able to teach all levels of core high school subjects. * Commitment to the LA LGBT Center program models and to incorporate practical learning experiences related to job readiness, life skills and leadership. * Coordinate with the LA LGBT Center staff and be a strong team player to ensure comprehensive, synchronized services. * Conduct culturally relevant classes appropriate for students coming from many cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and economic backgrounds and incorporating students' experiences into learning. * Communicate regularly with JMCS and LA LGBT Center leadership and appropriate staff about academic and non-academic issues that affect student progress * Incorporate college and career planning into regular classroom practice. * Monitor and evaluate student progress on standardized assessments * Attend community tabling events such as career fairs, resource fairs, etc. to actively recruit for potential new students. * Perform duties associated with attendance, records request and student record-keeping. * Other duties as assigned The teacher will complete all necessary paperwork as required by JMCS administration.
