TITLE: English Teacher - High School

SUMMARY: Reporting to the Building Principal, the High School English Teacher isresponsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each student skills of listening,speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to effective communication and literatecitizenship; that develops appreciation of good literature of all types; that motivates students toread widely for information and recreation; that develops standards for critical judgment ofwritten and oral communications transmitted by mass media; and that discovers and developsspecial talents of students in English to prepare each student to meet the state testing standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, and journalismutilizing designated curriculum.Adapts English material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments and lessonplans that guide and challenge students.Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials; provides individualized and small groupinstruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups ofstudents.Evaluates academic and social growth of students; keeps appropriate records to includeattendance reports and other recordkeeping activities, as necessary.Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.Evaluates each student's progress in meeting the course standards for English skills (listening,speaking, reading and writing).Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productiveclassroom environment.Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing andhelping students solve learning problems.Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree required. Licensed, or eligible for licensure, in English (8-12) by theMassachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of maintaining accurate and complete records as required by law and District policy.

Skill in guiding the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals and establishingand communicating clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.

Ability to communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships withstudents, staff, parents, and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in astationary position for extended periods and move or lift up to 25 lbs. Accommodations may bemade for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work is generally performed indoors and predominantly in a classroom and schoolenvironment.
