Job Description
RISE Academy is an alternative middle/high school within Lawrence Public Schools. RISE is a trauma-informed school, grounded in restorative justice, that values relationships and mutual respect with the belief that all students want to be successful in school. RISE students learn in a competency based structure in an academic and social-emotional program that works to prepare students for an ever changing world after high school.
We are seeking a High School Science (Biology and Urban Ecology) teacher to do the following:
Create a safe, purposeful classroom environment that prioritizes learning for all students
Collaborate with other teachers, instructional leaders, and partners to ensure instruction is meeting the needs of all students
Assess students regularly, analyze data, and determine appropriate next steps for instruction
Ensure that instruction meets the needs of all students, including students with special needs, English Language Learners, and students performing below grade level
Build relationships and communicate regularly with students and their families to solicit input and share academic progress
Participate in and learn from regular professional development opportunities before and during the school year
Develop curriculum for Science classes using the backwards design model in which planning follows these three steps: 1) identifying standards-aligned desired results (competencies and benchmarks); 2) designing performance tasks/assessments that provide evidence of learning; and 3) creating a learning plan. Science units.
Deliver daily Science lessons that are engaging, relevant, and rigorous.
Understand and apply effective strategies for intervention and differentiation in the classroom, including serving English language learners and students with individualized education plans (IEPs).
Embed opportunities for student critical-thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, as well as use of technology and digital media, into all lesson and unit plans.
Integrate reading and writing into every class taught, every day.
Maintain strong classroom management and hold students accountable for upholding school rules, student-developed norms, and classroom expectations.
Serve as an advisor to a group of 12 to 15 multi-age students who you meet with daily and to whom you provide support. Develop a sense of community within the advisory group and implement any advisory curriculum. Mentor and support these students' development of academic, social, health, and parenting skills to ensure they stay on track to graduation. Provide education and coaching for students around goal-setting and development of non-cognitive skills such as perseverance, courage, and more.
Qualifications
Experience teaching science at the middle or high school level preferred
Appropriate content/program area educator license Science (9-12) and grade level licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education preferred
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required
2 years' experience preferred
Bachelor's degree required
