Summary of Basic Functions & Responsibilities

Under the supervision and direction of the Tri Jr. Sr. High School Principal, the High School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, rigorous, and standards-aligned instruction for students in grades 9-12. This role requires the mastery and delivery of complex curricula, (possibly Advanced Placement (AP), dual-credit, or elective courses) fostering advanced inquiry, historiography, and global citizenship. The teacher creates a dynamic, inclusive learning environment that prepares students for post-secondary success through the analysis of geopolitical trends, economic systems, and democratic processes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teaches advanced knowledge and skills in specific social studies disciplines, such as U.S. Government, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, and World History, in accordance with Indiana Academic Standards and district curriculum.
  • Facilitates high-level inquiry by guiding students through the evaluation of complex primary sources, conflicting historical perspectives, and sophisticated data sets to build evidence-based arguments.
  • Cultivates a professional classroom culture that encourages civil discourse, intellectual risk-taking, and collaborative problem-solving regarding modern and historical societal issues.
  • Develops comprehensive syllabi and unit plans that scaffold learning toward mastery, utilizing differentiated instruction to challenge high-achieving students while supporting those needing remediation.
  • Integrates modern technology and digital literacy into the curriculum, teaching students to navigate digital archives, evaluate media bias, and utilize research databases effectively.
  • Prepares students for collegiate-level assessments, including standardized state exams, AP tests, and dual-credit requirements, through rigorous grading rubrics and consistent feedback.
  • Adapts instructional methods to meet the requirements of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and 504 Plans, ensuring equitable access to high-level content for all learners.
  • Maintains professional expertise by staying current with pedagogical trends, historical scholarship, and legislative changes affecting the social studies landscape.
  • Manages administrative records including attendance, grades, and behavioral documentation with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality via the district's Student Information System.
  • Serves as a mentor and advisor to students, providing guidance on academic pathways, college applications, and extracurricular opportunities like Mock Trial, Student Council, or History Day.
  • Collaborates with departmental peers to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment of the curriculum and participates in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
  • Communicates proactively with stakeholders, including parents, counselors, and administrators, to support student well-being and academic achievement.
  • Oversees classroom resources, including textbooks, digital subscriptions, and supplemental materials, ensuring all assets are utilized responsibly.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Qualifications

  • Valid Indiana Teaching License or ability to obtain one.
  • Pass Background Check
  • If position is in the bargaining unit, salary and benefits as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (found on www.shenry.k12.in.us under Certified Staff Information Center)
  • If Adjunct Faculty, salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and terms of the Adjunct Teaching Agreement
