OVERVIEW
The Ecology Learning Center is a charter public high school in Waldo County, Maine with the mission to deeply root students in Maines ecological and cultural landscapes, foster authentic real-world learning through mentorship and craft, and cultivate compassionate and resilient leaders prepared to engage in the challenges of today and tomorrow . The Center was authorized as the tenth and final charter school in Maine following a rigorous application process and operating a successful pilot program from 2018 to 2020. On September 1, 2020, we officially opened as a public charter high school. We now enroll 130 students in grades 9-12.
We believe all students have the right to rigorous, relevant, and joyful learning experiences led by exceptionally talented and diverse educators who promote student achievement and a sense of belonging. Our goal is to prepare students for college and careers while focusing on rural community development and environmental stewardship.
We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated teachers who are team-oriented, committed to student success, and inspired by the opportunity to continue developing an innovative school.
The Part Time Math teacher will teach two sections of Geometry, and inspire a love for problem-solving and computation regarding shapes, sizes, relative positions of figures, and properties of space. The teacher will align the Math curriculum with Common Core State Standards, helping students develop knowledge in Geometry and frequently engage students in hands-on projects that require students to communicate and think in mathematical terms.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach Algebra II / PreCalculus and Geometry to high school students
- Align project-based Math courses with school-wide environmental themes
- Collaborate with other teachers to connect learning across disciplines when possible (Math with English, Science, Social Studies, World Languages, Music, Visual Arts)
- Plan programs of study that meet the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Plan for instruction; show written evidence of planning upon request from the head of school.
- Work with students to develop and maintain standards of behavior based on school guidelines for indoor, outdoor, field research, and service learning class time, and take responsibility for their actions.
- Create a safe, supportive environment in which students treat one another with respect, develop awareness of diversity, and celebrate differences.
- Provide individualized and small group instruction to differentiate instruction and adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student. Coordinate with special education staff to meet the needs of students with IEPs.
- Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis through portfolio review and narrative assessment. Provide reports and notify parents of student progress.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of curriculum planning and student assessment as required by school guidelines, Maine DOE law, and charter commission policy.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Co-lead at least one overnight wilderness trip per year (hiking, camping, backpacking, canoeing) to support school-wide outdoor adventure curriculum
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree or higher in related field
- Maine teaching certificate in Mathematics (grades 9-12)
OR meets Maine DOE certification requirements in Mathematics
AND successfully completes Praxis exam
- Experience teaching high school Math
- Experience and training in developing place-based, interdisciplinary curricula for high school students
- Highly responsible, self-motivated, flexible, and capable of working in varied settings
- Has an abundance of patience working with teens, a good sense of humor, and strong work ethic
- Be able to successfully pass all background, criminal record, fingerprinting, reference checks
