POSITION TITLE:

Special Education Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Valid certification in special education
  • Such alternatives or additional qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

SUPERVISES:

Students and assigned personnel

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, and goals.
  • Assesses student needs and develops an individual education program (IEP)/504 plan for students with disabilities; monitors and updates IEPs/504 plans as needed.
  • Implements developmentally appropriate instructional strategies.
  • Trains and supervises teacher assistants for students with disabilities.
  • Cooperates with other professionals to coordinate services for students.
  • Assists teachers with the implementation of appropriate classroom accommodations/modifications.
  • Assists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/adaptive devices.
  • Assists with the coordination of the local school process for the identification and referral of students for special education services.
  • Maintains/monitors records of students served by the instructional support team.
  • Serves as a team member in determining student accommodations, referral, eligibility, placement, and individual program development.
  • Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Complies with local, state, and federal regulations regarding Special Education records, reports, and services.
  • Cooperates with teachers, counselors, therapists, and other school personnel in the provision of effective educational services to students.
  • Maintains frequent and substantive communication with parents.
  • Cooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local school/system.
  • Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws.
  • Has knowledge of appropriate assessment and testing techniques of students with multiple disabilities. Develops service delivery models, which match state and local objectives in accordance with student needs.
  • Provides services that may include technical/medical interventions, as well as developmentally appropriate learning activities.
  • Consults with classroom teachers, school personnel, service providers, and medical personnel in planning, delivering, and evaluating interventions that positively impact the developmental needs of the student.
  • Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication, organization, and collaborative skills.
  • Has the ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, such as lifting and carrying children.
  • Participates in transition planning and preparation for adult life experiences.
  • Implements appropriate environment and behavior management strategies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

EVALUATION:

Nine-month position in accordance with the Board's salary schedule.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Tarrant city Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.

This is an exempt position.
