Job Description

The Special Education Paraeducator will assist teachers and other professional practitioners by providing instructional support in self-contained classrooms with students participating in special needs public programs (Alternative Education, Courthouse Academy, ECSE (Early Childhood Special Education), Gateway Academy, and Q.U.E.S.T) whose educational needs are not met by a general education environment.
Essential Job Functions:
Assist students with the organization and completion of daily work assignments
Assist in maintaining a safe, nurturing, and healthy atmosphere, which may include assisting students with social skill development, personal hygiene, toiletry needs/toilet training
Follows established procedures for monitoring and redirecting student behavior when supervising small groups
Maintains and organizes students instructional materials and/or cumulative files
Administer and/or assist with preparing for various assessments for students as necessary
Uses special skills (i.e. sign language, transliterating, advanced computer training) to assist in two-way communication between the teacher and the student as necessary
Performs additional non-instructional duties including, but not limited to, cafeteria duty, bus duty, hall duty, and office duty
Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee
Education and Experience:
Required
High School Diploma or GED
A minimum of two (2) years working with children within an instructional, educational or related setting
Ability to successfully complete and maintain a Basic First Aid and CPR certification
Special Requirements:
Special education teachers assigned to work with students with emotional disabilities should have been trained in MANDT methodology and should receive additional training, as appropriate, annually.
