    JOB SUMMARY :

    The Dougherty County School System seeks dedicated and student-centered Special Education Teachers who hold or are eligible for Georgia certification in Special Education to support the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth of students with disabilities.

    The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and collaborates with general education teachers to ensure students receive appropriate services and access to the general education curriculum. This role includes developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), providing differentiated instruction, monitoring student progress, and promoting inclusive practices that support student achievement and independence.

    The Special Education Teacher works closely with school administrators, general education teachers, related service providers, families, and support staff to ensure students receive high-quality educational services aligned with IDEA, state regulations, and district expectations.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. BBachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field, required;
    2. Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) teaching certificate in Special Education General Curriculum (P12) or eligibility for certification;
    3. General Education certification (Elementary Education or related field) preferred or required depending on assignment;
    4. Knowledge of IEP development, implementation, and progress monitoring;
    5. Experience supporting students with diverse learning, behavioral, and developmental needs preferred;
    6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and Board may find appropriate.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    1. Strong understanding of special education law, IDEA compliance, and IEP procedures;
    2. Ability to design and deliver differentiated and specially designed instruction;
    3. Knowledge of inclusive practices, co-teaching models, and collaborative instructional strategies;
    4. Ability to analyze student data to guide instructional decisions and monitor student progress;
    5. Strong communication and collaboration skills with teachers, families, and multidisciplinary teams;
    6. Ability to create a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment;
    7. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining documentation and compliance requirements;
    8. Ability to effectively integrate instructional technology and assistive technology to support student learning;
    9. Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive student information with professionalism.

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Provides specially designed instruction to students with disabilities in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs);
    2. Collaborates with general education teachers to implement inclusive instructional strategies and accommodations;
    3. Participates in the development, implementation, and review of IEPs, including annual meetings and progress monitoring;
    4. Assesses student performance using formal and informal assessments to guide instructional planning;
    5. Adapts and modifies curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessments to meet individual student needs;
    6. Maintains accurate and timely IEP documentation, progress reports, and compliance records;
    7. Utilizes evidence-based instructional practices to support academic and behavioral success;
    8. Supports students in developing independence, self-advocacy skills, and social-emotional competencies;
    9. Implements behavior intervention strategies and supports positive classroom management practices;
    10. Collaborates with related service providers, instructional coaches, and support staff to coordinate services;
    11. Communicates regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and educational needs;
    12. Participates in professional learning opportunities to enhance instructional practice and maintain certification requirements;
    13. Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance and fulfills professional responsibilities as assigned;
    14. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Ability to lift and carry teaching materials, books, or small classroom equipment (typically up to 25 lbs);
    2. Ability to prepare and manipulate learning materials;
    3. Ability to stand and actively move around the classroom for extended periods;
    4. Ability to move between classrooms, hallways, and other school areas as needed;
    5. Ability to respond quickly in case of emergencies, such as evacuating students or assisting during drills;
    6. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    REPORTS TO : Principal

    SALARY RANGE: 10-Month Contract - Competitive salary and excellent benefits package in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide.
