PRIMARY PURPOSE: Provide choral instruction and encourage students to develop the skill and ability to excel in vocal/choral ability. Responsible for contributing to the educational program as a whole and to the growth of each student. Provide opportunities for students to participate in a high-level, challenging curriculum in the areas of responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Master's Degree, preferred; Bachelor's Degree required

Music Degree (Vocal/Choral Emphasis); Music Teacher Certification (Vocal/Choral Emphasis) EC-12 required

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operation of choral music program

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Knowledge of state TMEA and UIL policies governing choir

Ability to implement policy and procedures

Ability to interpret data

Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

General knowledge of teaching techniques and procedures

Experience:

At least five years of successful choir teaching experience and choral program administration preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Establishes performance criteria for competition and evaluates students' musical abilities initially and on a regular basis.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student musical group involved.
  • Manages and supervises choir activities, contests and practice sessions that promote individual growth in musical skills, teamwork and appropriate concert/performance etiquette.
  • Keeps informed of and ensures compliance with all DISD/UIL/TMEA rules and guidelines.
  • Recruits and retains student membership in the choir program, as well as monitors and enforces student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
  • Works with Fine Arts Director in scheduling competitions and coordinating arrangements.
  • Cooperates with other members of the school staff in planning and implementing instructional goals and objectives for the overall educational development of student performances.
  • Assists in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  • Compiles, maintains and files all reports, records, inventory and additional required data using Charms music management system and other required documents.
  • Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules and the local board policy in area of music.
  • Follows all the rules, regulations and policies of Denton ISD and follows directives from superiors.
  • Follows attendance policy as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Performs other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or Supervisor.
  • Travels with choir students and supervises group during choir competitions in assigned events.
  • Maintains proper and appropriate discipline among students during choir contests, practice sessions and while on trips off school property.
  • Encourages, by example, and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of choir participation.
  • Establishes and maintains open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintains professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Articulates the district's mission and goals in the area of choir to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.
  • Supports choir booster club activities and ensure operation according to UIL Booster Club Guidelines.
  • Obtains and uses evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
  • Recommends policies to improve program.
  • Demonstrates awareness of district-community needs and initiates activities to meet those identified needs.
  • Demonstrates the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
  • Develops professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  • Assesses and responds to needs related to job responsibilities.
  • Develops and coordinates a continuing evaluation of the choral program and implement changes based on the findings.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interprets policy, procedures and data; coordinates district functions; maintains emotional control under stress

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent districtwide and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions

MINIMUM SALARY: Teacher Pay

DUTY DAYS: 187

APPOINTMENT: The appointment of this position will be recommended to the Board of Trustees by the Superintendent of Schools on the basis of the applicant's training, experience, and expertise. The Board of Trustees must give final approval.
