Rolling Hills Preparatory School (RHP) and its sister school, The Renaissance School for Arts and Sciences, announce a mid-year (January 2009) opening for an experienced full-time teacher of theater. Located on a beautiful new campus in San Pedro, on the Eastern slopes of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the schools offer a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum to students in grades 6-12. The mission of the schools is to develop in its students, disciplined minds, sound character, healthy bodies and creative spirits. Responsibilities The theatre teacher will report to the Chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department, and will work closely with the Director of Middle and Upper Schools and the Director of The Renaissance School for Arts and Sciences. The position combines the responsibilities of a full-time classroom teacher and advisor in a lively college-preparatory school with those of a youth drama and musical director. Teaching and Advising The position?s primary teaching responsibilities will be instruction of 6th grade drama and 7th grade drama, which are quarter and semester classes taught to different groups each session, and two sections of upper school theatre, which are year-long courses. Each class meets three times per week for between 70 and 90 minutes. Students from The Renaissance School for Arts and Sciences join RHP students in many of these classes. Every full-time teacher also acts as an advisor/counselor to approximately 12 students and participates in a week-long outdoor education trip each fall. High-quality communication with parents is a must. Productions The teacher is responsible for directing two major productions, the upper school fall play and the all-school spring musical. Other minor productions include two afternoon ?coffee houses,? an evening of student-directed one-act plays, and supporting Classical Night, International Day and Grandparents? Day performances, and the 8th grade play. The teacher works closely with other members of the department, technical support staff, members of the development office, the Parents? Association, and outside agencies such as The Warner Grand Theater and Torrance Cultural Arts Center. Qualifications. The successful applicant will have completed significant undergraduate and/or graduate study in theatre or theatre education (a BFA and, ideally, an MFA will be preferred) and will have taught drama/theatre arts at the middle school and/or secondary-school school level, preferably in a private school setting. The successful candidate must have substantial experience directing and managing all aspects of production and must be able to work with students who vary in ability, experience, and learning styles. Familiarity with computers (PC/Windows platform and Microsoft Office) is essential. References should speak to an applicant?s ability as a dynamic educator, as an effective, supportive mentor for adolescents, and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with adult colleagues, volunteers and parents. Understanding of, and a willingness to contribute to, furtherance of the schools mission, will distinguish the successful candidate.
